That was Swati's life a few years ago. A new apartment in one of the city's busiest corridors, scaffolding on three sides, and a persistent, frustrating question that she couldn't seem to answer no matter how many online stores she tried: where do I find a bedsheet that is actually pure cotton, thoughtfully designed, and won't make me wake up with a rash?
Swati had just received a bedsheet set she'd ordered online — supposedly 100% cotton, with good reviews. It arrived beautifully packaged. She washed it, put it on the bed, and within two nights, the familiar itch was back. She checked the label more carefully. "Cotton rich" — a phrase she now knows means anything from 60% to 85% cotton, padded out with polyester. She returned it. The replacement was worse.
She called her mother Rekha that evening and said something she hadn't planned to say: "I think we should just make this ourselves." There was a pause on the line. Then Rekha said: "I've been thinking the same thing for years."
Rekha had spent decades with a deep appreciation for Indian textiles — the kind of appreciation that comes from growing up with a linen cupboard full of handwoven cotton, from knowing the difference between fabric that softens beautifully over years and fabric that pills within months. She had watched that craft slowly disappear from Indian homes, replaced by cheaper, synthetic alternatives dressed up in attractive packaging.
Mother and daughter had, separately and for different reasons, arrived at the same frustration. And in that phone call, they decided to do something about it.
The Road to Sanganer
The answer, when they found it, was not in a factory. It was in a cluster of workshops on the outskirts of Jaipur, in a small town called Sanganer that has been home to handblock printing artisans for over five centuries.
Sanganeri block printing is one of India's oldest surviving textile crafts. Artisans carve intricate motifs — botanical patterns, geometric jaal repeats, Mughal-era florals, peacock feathers, abstract butis — into blocks of teak wood, some carved by the same families who have been doing this work for generations. They press these blocks by hand onto pure cotton fabric, one impression at a time, using natural and azo-free dyes. The result is something no digital printing machine can replicate: a slight variation in pressure, a ghost of the block's edge, a warmth in the colour that only hand-mixed dye on natural cotton produces.
On their first visit to Sanganer, Swati and Rekha were shown into a workshop where a master artisan — third generation in his family's craft — was printing a run of indigo florals onto mulmul cotton. He worked without measuring anything. The alignment between each block impression came from muscle memory built over thirty years. Swati watched him work and asked how he knew when a print was right. He looked up briefly, pressed another block, and said simply: "You feel it in your hands."
They placed their first order that afternoon. The artisan told them it would take three weeks. It took four — because he wasn't satisfied with how one of the dye lots had turned out, and he redid the entire run. That, they realised, was exactly the kind of person they wanted to make Aenak with.
